On Saturday, at least 9 individuals sustained injuries at a California college St. Patrick’s Day party as a result of a garage roof collapse.
A large number of students gathered at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, mostly wearing green, partying from Friday night into Saturday morning catching university and city officials off-guard.
Almost 3 dozen individuals were standing on the roof before the roof collapsed. Screams and gasps could be heard throughout the party as the roof went down.
According to the city of San Luis Obispo, an individual sustained severe injury as his thigh was impaled by a piece of debris that came from the roof. 8 other individuals were treated for cuts and bruises which they suffered due to the roof collapse. No other individual sustained life-threatening injuries.
3 individuals were taken into custody for misdemeanors, told police Capt. Chris Staley. The early partying caught police by surprise, added Staley.
San Luis Obispo Tribune was told by Staley, “This is completely unprecedented. We’ve never had anything like this”.
According to the university, it is working with the police and it is doing its own investigation that can result in disciplinary measures.
The school’s fraternities and sororities have been on social probation and were forbidden from holding parties at their own houses or elsewhere since January due to reports of possible sexual assaults, told the school spokesman Matt Lazier. “Once we have all the facts, the university will respond swiftly and accordingly,” added Lazier.
