A 57-year-old Rialto man driving a Ford Explorer was hit by a train Thursday morning at Las Posas Road and Fifth Street near Camarillo, CA.
The incident took place Thursday morning when the driver of the sport utility vehicle hit a freight train.
The driver was travelling south on Las Posas when he hit the side of an eastbound Union Pacific train. According to California Highway Patrol Officer, Dave Webb, the incident took place when the driver was approaching Fifth and the railroad tracks at about 8:25 a.m.
As a result, the SUV was pushed onto the right shoulder where it overturned several times before ending up in a dirt culvert with heavy damage.
Ventura County Firefighters and emergency personnel responded to the scene. They had to cut the vehicle apart to extract the driver who was reported dead at the scene. The name of the victim was released.
California Highway Patrol officers are investigating the crash.
No other passenger was riding the SUV and no other injuries were reported. Three people were on board the freight train and no one was injured according to officials.
A statement released by Francisco Castillo, a spokesman for Union Pacific Railroad, said that peer counselors were available for the locomotive engineers and conductor. They were hauling lumber in the 13-car train.
