40-year-old Bryce Hanes, a San Bernardino Officer, who was a father of 3, died in an accident which was caused by a person who was driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to San Bernardino Police Chief, Jarrod Burguan, the cop was leaving the West Valley Detention Center in his cruiser at about 2 a.m. when it was T-boned in Ontario.
Police told that a Dodge Charger blew through a red light while traveling east, colliding with the passenger side of the patrol car. The patrol vehicle spun out of control and struck a traffic signal. The Charger went off the road, over an embankment and stopped in a field.
Hanes sustained serious injuries and was taken to a hospital where he died and the person who was behind the wheel of the other vehicle was taken into custody.
On Thursday, the officer was remembered as a loving man. Mourners paid tribute to Hanes by placing flowers on a department memorial for deceased officers.
Bishop Marc Larson said, “I love him and I loved his family. He’ll be respected and remembered as a man who always smiled and loved every person he came in contact with”.
“He never received complaints. He literally has been an exemplary officer for this city and this department,” said Burguan.
According to the police, 27-year-old Archie Green III was given treatment for non-life threatening injuries at a hospital and was taken into custody on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony DUI causing injury or death.
Bernardino police Lt. Rich Lawhead said that Hanes spent much of his professional career working at night time so he could spend time with his wife and kids. He added, “He had plenty of seniority to be on any shift he wanted. He chose to be on the graveyard shift so he could spend the days and weekends with his family”.
Hanes who served the patrol division department for almost 12 years left behind a wife and three children under the age of 12.
Governor Jerry Brown told that Flags at the state Capitol will be flown at half-staff in honor of Hanes, and Brown said he and his wife Anne will “join all Californians in mourning his loss and vow to always remember his selfless service and sacrifice on behalf of his community”.
For Friday, a tribute for Hanes was planned by the Inland Empire Emerald Society at Shamrock’s Pub and Grille.
